Company History

Hancock Building Associates, Inc. was incorporated by R. Keith McLean in February of 1990. Keith’s experiences working for local contractors as a laborer through the ranks of foreman during his high school and college days paved the way to his eventually start of his own business in the building trade.

Upon graduating from West Virginia University, Keith spent 2 years with Certainteed Corporation as a district manager responsible for the manufacturing of exterior home building products. Upon leaving Certainteed, McLean spent 2 additional years in Boston working for a home builder-remodeler.

Keith decided to return to his hometown roots in 1989, and after a brief stint with a window fabrication business, leaped into his own business. McLean's philosophy of using quality products and professional workmanship while providing competitive pricing has enabled HBA to be a successful and reputable home improvement company along the main line and surrounding communities ever since.

Mulberry Lane Spruce-Up: Media, PA

For HBA, the focus of this Media, PA renovation was to professionally install a Certainteed Symphony slate composite shingle to the roof of the main house. To finish off the new look of this historic home, HBA professionals installed new 5/8in. x 24in. Tapersawn cedar shingles to entire back shed dormer and front three (3) dormers and completed cedar shingle details along front entry pent and right side lower roof area walls at a 10in. exposure.

In the process, Hancock professionals removed the existing two (2) layers of asphalt and one (1) layer of cedar, inspected and replaced all 1x3 lathe and installed CDX 4-ply exterior grade plywood sheathing over the lathe. To alleviate ice dam effects, Hancock pros installed an ice and water shield along first 3 feet of roof edge per township code. New C4 white aluminum drip edge was installed along eaves and rakes and 30 pound asphalt saturated roof felt was installed as a moisture barrier.

As added protection against the elements, five (5) copper neoprene soil pipe flanges were replaced and new copper step flashings were installed along wall joints. Sixteen (16) oz copper reglet attached to wall joint counter flashing, new 24in. 16 oz copper reglet attached to two (2) stucco chimneys step & counter flashing were installed. Finally, HBA pros relined, locked and soldered one (1) 2 foot gusset using 24in. 16oz copper behind the stucco chimney. Relining the valleys was performed using 24in. 16 oz copper with a 1in. standing seam. For aesthetics and added protection, new 100-pound copper snow guards were also added to the front and right roof areas.

The existing gutters and downspouts were removed and replaced with new copper were necessary and new copper roof shanks. Circles were reused and existing copper gutters were re-hung and graded for proper drainage.

The two most important reasons for venting a roof in cold climates are removing moisture and controlling ice dams. By installing four (4) Lomanco Series 865 passive roof louvers on right side and back dormer roof areas, HBA pros helped to establish positive ventilation under the roof system. The installation of Certainteed Shinglevent II continuous ridge vent (hip over system) will also increase the passive positive air pressure along the ridge.

A 20-Year limited workmanship warranty and lifetime manufacturer’s warranty on roof shingles prove HBA professionals mean business.
